Watch AJ Banal beats Jose Angel Beranza by unanimous decision (with video)

Watch AJ Banal beats Jose Angel Beranza by unanimous decision (with video). There was no knockout this time but Filipino KO artist AJ “Bazooka" Banal piled up enough points despite a point-deduction for low blow to beat Mexican Jose Angel Beranza in their 10-round junior featherweight non-title bout Saturday night in Honolulu, Hawaii (Sunday in Manila).

Banal thus made it 2-of-2 for the three Filipino fighters seeing action in the “Island Assault" card topbilled by the “Hawaiian Punch" Brian Viloria, who’s defending his IBF light flyweight title against Mexican Jesus Iribe in the main event.

Junior welterweight Dennis Laurente earlier got the Philippines off to a fine start, outpointing Mexican Zaid Zavaleta in their own 10-round gig.

The 20-year-old Banal, who had KO’ed all his foes in his last six wins, landed crisp shots alternately on Beranza’s head and body most of the way, opening a cut above the Mexican’s right eyelid by the end of the fifth.

The Bukidnon-born Banal continued to land power shots but Beranza would not go down, and even the Mexican managed to connect on a flurry of punches before the end of the eighth.

An accidental clash of heads wounded Banal over the left eye in the ninth and opened another cut on Beranza, this time over his left brow.

The cut though, didn’t affect Banal’s attacks in the last two rounds.

A low blow cost Banal a point deduction in the ninth but the Filipino had already accumulated a big edge on all the judges’ scorecards: 99-92, 98-91 and 98-92.

With the win, the Cebu-based Banal hiked his win-loss record to 20-1-1 (16 KOs), his lone loss coming from Panama ’s Rafael Concepcion in the July 2008 battle for the interim WBA superflyweight title in Cebu . It was also the first non-KO win for Banal since October 2006 when he scored a UD decision over Indonesia ’s Angky Angkota, also in Cebu .

The 33-year-old Beranza dropped to 32-16-2 (25 KOs), his seventh loss in his last nine fights.

Watch the "Island Assault" fight of Brian Viloria vs. Jesus Iribe Live

Watch the "Island Assault" fight of Brian Viloria vs. Jesus Iribe Live. The boxing event will be featured was dubbed as the Island Assault. This will be happening at the Neal Blaisdell Convention Center in Honolulu, Hawaii this coming August 29, 2009.

Phil-American boxier Brian Viloria "the Hawaiian Punch" will be defending his IBF Light Flyweight title against the Mexican fighter Jesus “the Azul” Iribe.

Brian Viloria"the Hawaiian Punch" has a career record of 25 wins and 2 losses with 15 victories came by the way of knockout, while the challenger Jesus "Azul" Iribe has a 15 wins 5 losses and with 1 knockout.

Brian Viloria Profile

Brian Viloria (born November 24, 1980 in Honolulu, Hawaii) is a Filipino American professional boxer and a former WBC Light Flyweight champion and the current IBF Junior Flyweight champion. His nickname "The Hawaiian Punch" probably comes from Jesus Salud, another former world champion in boxing.

On September 10, 2005, he dropped down to light flyweight and won the WBC title by knocking out Eric Ortiz in the first round with a powerful right.

He defended it once successfully in 2006 and was undefeated in 20 bouts (1 was a no-contest). Viloria's unbeaten streak ended when Mexican Omar Niño Romero won by decision.

In a rematch held on November 18, 2006 at Las Vegas, Nevada, Romero held onto his title with a controversial majority draw decision, with Viloria knocking down Niño twice. Following the fight, Niño was stripped of his title when he failed a post fight drug test being tested positive for methamphetamines and the second match between them was declared a no-contest.

On April 14, 2007, he fought Edgar Sosa for the vacant WBC title but lost a decision. Viloria then decided to move up to the super flyweight division and began training under former champion, Roberto Garcia, at La Colonia Gym in Oxnard, California.[1]

Brian Viloria (20-2) won a unanimous decision against Jose Garcia Bernal (26-11-1) in his debut at the super flyweight division at the Alameda Swap Meet in Los Angeles, California on January 5, 2008. Viloria knocked Bernal down in the 8th (final) round. All 3 judges scored 78-72 for Viloria.[2] Viloria followed that win by scoring four more victories (Cesar Lopez by Unanimous Decision, Fred Heberto Valdez by a 3rd round KO, Juan Javier Lagos by Unanimous Decision, and Benjamin Garcia by 2nd round KO).

On April 19, 2009, Viloria moved back down to junior flyweight to challenge Mexican Ulises "Archie" Solis for the IBF Junior Flyweight title, putting in what perhaps is the best performance of his career. Pressured by a fading career due to his past losses in big fights, Viloria defeated Solis, whom at the time of the fight was rated the #1 Jr. Flyweight by the Ring Magazine[3] in the 11th round with a vicious right to the jaw. The official bout stoppage was a KO 2:56 into the 11th round. [4] The fight was held at Araneta Coliseum in the Philippines, site of Thrilla in Manila, as the co-main event of the Donaire-Martinez fight. Along with the win, Viloria snapped Solis' 11-fight unbeaten streak, 8 of which were title defenses while extending his win streak to 6.

Jesus Iribe Profile

Jesus “Azul” Iribe of Mexico, who hasn’t lost a fight since 2007. Iribe is the current Federation of Boxing Commissions (Fecombox) light flyweight champion and ranked in the top 20 by the IBF.
Jesus Iribe is a Mexican boxer with boxing record won 15 (KO 9) + lost 5 (KO 1) + drawn 5 = 25.

Exploding Apple iPhone incident follows iPod reports

Exploding Apple iPhone incident follows iPod reports. A French teenager's claim that an Apple iPhone shattered in his face is a first involving the device but similar incidents have occurred with the iPod according to a US television station.

Marie-Dominique Kolega, whose 18-year-old son was struck in the eye by a piece of glass when the screen shattered on his girlfriend's iPhone, has threatened to file a complaint against Apple following the incident.

A man displays an iPhone. A French teenager's claim that an Apple iPhone shattered in his face is a first involving the device but similar incidents have occurred with the iPod according to a US television station.

According to Kolega, the phone began making a hissing noise and the screen suddenly broke, sending pieces flying in the air.

"My son was frightened but he did not lose an eye," Kolega, of Aix-en-Provence in southern France, told AFP.

The report is the first such incident involving an iPhone.

But US television news station KIRO reported in late July that an "alarming number" of iPods "have suddenly burst into flames and smoke, injuring people and damaging property."

The station said that Apple lawyers tried to stop it from getting hold of hundreds of pages of iPod-related documents from the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) in California, where Apple has its headquarters.

It said the 800 pages of documents included information on "15 burn and fire-related incidents blamed by iPod owners on their iPods."

There were no reports of serious injuries, and the cause of the trouble appeared to be overheated lithium ion batteries, according to the Seattle-based television station's review of the paperwork.

The CPSC indicated that the number of incidents was low considering the tens of millions of iPods sold and that such reports diminished after Apple evidently changed the battery technology, according to KIRO.

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), feature late former President Cory Aquino, new P500 bill design

Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP), feature late former President Cory Aquino, new P500 bill design. The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) on Monday said they are now studying the possible design of a new P500 bill that would feature the late former president Corazon Aquino alongside her husband, the late former senator Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino Jr.

The BSP Numismatic and Concept Committee said Mrs. Aquino is already qualified to have her image put in a bill or coin. (Read: BSP mulling to put Cory on P500 bill)

For a person to have his or her image printed on a bill, the person should already be dead, has made a significant contribution to the country, and should embody something unique about the Filipino people.

"To recognize the contributions of President Aquino to the cause of democracy, to the cause of national unity, how do we do that? We intend to put her portrait in the P500 notes," BSP Deputy Governor Diwa Gunigundo said.

The BSP expects to have the lay-out ready by October, and once approved, the first batch of bills with Cory and Ninoy's images will be out early 2010.

Along with this possible new design, the BSP is preparing to include new technologies on the current bills to heighten security and to prevent fraud.

This idea first came out after a possible design of a new P500 bill, made by 22-year-old Reno Naval, came out on the internet.

"I posted [the design] as my first post on my website (www.peaceloveandrevolution.com). And then surprisingly, there were a lot of people who saw it, and when the website was [published] on [the newspapers], it spread out like wildfire," Naval said about the spread of his design on the internet.

"Kung ano man ang ma-finalize na konsepto, as long as magkasama sila, masaya silang dalawa (sa disenyo), for sure buong buhay ng mga Pilipino maaalala natin 'tong dalawang bayani na ito," he said.

Millions of people joined the burial of the late former President Cory "Corazon" Aquino (with video)

Millions of people joined the burial of the late former President Cory "Corazon" Aquino (with video). Millions more people, including from the 8.7-million-strong overseas Filipino community, monitored the slow progress of the cortege on television and Internet streaming sites. Farewell to former president Corazon Aquino, whose "People Power" democracy movement ended decades of dictatorship.

Aquino, who died aged 76 after a long battle with cancer, was to be buried in a private ceremony after a long funeral procession skirting the Philippine capital's gleaming business towers and teeming shantytowns.

With a national holiday called as part of 10 days of official mourning, thousands of people surrounded her coffin as it left Manila Cathedral following a mass just before noon draped in the national flag.

By mid-afternoon, a police spokesman told reporters 150,000 people lined the 18-kilometre (11-mile) route from the cathedral to the cemetery where she was to be laid to rest.

It took over four hours for the vehicle to travel just one third of the route. Men and women standing at least 10-deep on both sides of the road openly wept as the truck crawled through the swelling crowd, while military helicopters circled overhead, showering them with yellow confetti.

People in buildings lining Manila's streets opened their windows, hung yellow banners and dropped confetti onto the sea of mourners below. A crowd of nuns, their blue habits wet from the rain, released white doves and yellow balloons yellow was Aquino's signature colour. Ships docked along Manila Bay sounded mournful horns. Aquino was to be laid to rest alongside her husband Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, who was gunned down at Manila airport in 1983 as he returned home to challenge the dictator Marcos.

President Gloria Arroyo, whom Aquino had turned against over accusations of corruption in the Arroyo administration, made a brief pre-dawn visit to the cathedral to pay her last respects.

She shook hands with the former leader's son, Senator Benigno Aquino, and prayed briefly over the casket.

Arroyo cut short a visit to the United States following the former leader's death on Saturday and was met by the Aquino family.

But she was pointedly excluded from the invitation-only mass that was also attended by two past presidents, Fidel Ramos and Joseph Estrada, and foreign diplomats.

The family had rejected Arroyo's offer to hold a state funeral, reflecting the icy relationship between the only two Filipino women to have led the fractious and impoverished Southeast Asian nation of 90 million people.

The couple celebrated their engagement at L.A.'s Sunset Tower Hotel in October 2008 with family and friends.

They were engaged in December 2007, and later that year Larter, 33, spoke about her husband-to-be saying MacArthur, 32, "brought light to my life. I feel lucky every morning when I wake up and see him."

Thousands of people pay last respects to late former President Corazon Aquino

Thousands of people pay last respects to late former President Corazon Aquino. Thousands of people continued to line up at the Manila Cathedral to pay their last respects to the late former President Corazon Cojuangco Aquino on Tuesday morning.

A one-kilometer line, passing three streets leading to the cathedral, of supporters who woke up early to pay their last respects to the former president formed as soon as organizers reopened the public viewing of the Aquino's remains at 7 a.m. Police inspections were put up in Anda, Urdaneta and Real streets. Organizers estimate that more than 100,000 people have showed up at the cathedral since Mrs. Aquino was transferred there from the La Salle-Greenhills in San Juan City on Monday.

Superintendent Pablo Balagtas of the Manila Police District said they expect more people to troop to the cathedral as Mrs. Aquino's interment nears. The former president will be put next to her husband, national hero Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, at the Manila Memoral Park in Parañaque City on Wednesday afternoon.

Among the early supporters at the cathedral was former Chief Justice Hilario Davide Jr., who flew straight from New York to pay his last respects to the former president. "Gratitude for the services she had rendered our country. She had a purity of heart, the sincerity of purpose... made perfect by her humility and deep spirituality," Davide said.

"In life she was with us. In death she should be more with us." Davide was one of the 50 members of the Constitutional Commission formed by Mrs. Aquino. The late president also appointed Davide as chairman of the Commission on Elections in 1989 and was also appointed head of a presidential fact-finding body to investigate the December 1989 coup. Not a picky eater Rorina Navales, Mrs. Aquino's cook for 8 years, told ABS-CBN's Umagang Kay Ganda that she cannot imagine cooking for any other employer. She said Mrs. Aquino was the kindest employer she had.

"Wala po akong masasabi. Mabuti po siyang amo. Mabait po talaga si ma'am," Navales said as she tries to keep back her tears during the morning news program. She said whenever a household helper commits a mistake, Mrs. Aquino would just say, "Ay ikaw talaga." She said Mrs. Aquino's kitchen masterpiece was chicken liver pâté, which is also the late president's favorite. She said Mrs. Aquino would cook it during family get-togethers, as a gift to friends and for her own consumption. Navales said Mrs. Aquino starts her day with coffee and pandesal, and chicken liver pâté, if available.

After breakfast, she said the former president returns to her bedroom to read newspaper and pray the Rosary before preparing to go to work. She said Mrs. Aquino is not a picky eater and did not ask for her to cook a specific dish in the last 8 years.

Japanese researchers: Implanted bioengineered seed-like tissue into the jaws of mice, growing new teeth for the rodents

Japanese researchers: Implanted bioengineered seed-like tissue into the jaws of mice, growing new teeth for the rodents. August 3, 2009 in Washington, Japanese researchers have successfully implanted bioengineered seed-like tissue into the jaws of mice, growing new teeth for the rodents, according to a study published Monday.

The study, presented in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences demonstrates a technique that could be used to replace other organs.

Biologists have previously cultivated limited tissue in a laboratory and successfully transplanted it into animals.

But the researchers, led by Etsuko Ikeda of the Tokyo University of Science, "explored ways to grow a three-dimensional organ in place, starting with teeth," the report said.

"The researchers developed a bioengineered tooth germ, which is a seed-like tissue containing the cells and instructions necessary to form a tooth, and transplanted the germ into the jawbones of mice," it said.

"The authors report that the germs regularly grew into replacement teeth," the report said.

The researchers were able to grow the teeth in gums that had previously held milk and adult teeth and successfully repeated the procedure on multiple occasions, producing teeth hard enough to chew food.

"Our study provides the first evidence of a successful replacement of an entire and fully functioning organ in an adult body through the transplantation of bioengineered organ germ, reconstituted by single cell manipulation in vitro," said Takasha Tsuji, one of the study's authors and a professor at Tokyo University of Science.

The researchers said their method could provide "a model for future organ replacement therapy."

They hope that scientists will eventually be able to use the technique to "develop fully functioning bioengineered organs that can replace lost or damaged organs following disease, injury or aging," the study said.

Giant marine worms live 475 million years ago in Cabaneros National Park

Giant marine worms live 475 million years ago in Cabaneros National Park. In August 3, 2009 (AFP) - Spanish researchers said Monday they have discovered evidence of a type of giant worm that lived 475 million years ago and was up to one metre (three feet) in length.

The fossilised tracks of the marine worms were found in the Cabaneros National Park in central Spain in an area that was a seabed during the Lower Ordovician period, the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) said.

It said the creatures lived in horizontal galleries of five metres in length and 15-20 centimetres in diameter under the seabed.

The galleries were lined "with mucous secretions to harden them and prevent their collapse, which has facilitated their preservation," said paleontologist Juan Carlos Gutierrez Marco.

They are the "oldest tracks of giant worms" ever discovered, pre-dating those found in Devon, England, this year and which dated from 200 million years ago, the CSIC quoted him as saying.

He explained why the worms, which were up to one metre in length and 15 centimetres in diameter, could attain such great size.

"For more than 450 millions years ago our country was part of a marine platform of an ancient continent called Gondwana," Gutierrez Marco said.

"The Iberian Peninsula was then near the south pole of the era. Organisms living in very cold water have a metabolism that allows them to grow bigger -- what is known as polar gigantism."

Former President Corazon Aquino: People power icon, passes away at 76

Former President Corazon Aquino: People power icon, passes away at 76. Corazon Aquino, the country’s first woman president, died yesterday at 3:18 a.m. at the Makati Medical Center after an 18-month battle with colon cancer. She was 76.

She had fulfilled her mission to lead her people from the oppression of a dictatorship toward democracy. She never let her guard down. The world honored – and continues to honor – her for this.

“Our mother peacefully passed away at 3:18 a.m., Aug. 1, 2009, of cardio-respiratory arrest,” Mrs. Aquino’s only son Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III announced from the lobby of the Makati Medical Center around 6 a.m. yesterday. Even as Senator Aquino spoke, thousands of yellow ribbons fluttered on the streets around the hospital, the avenues winding through the metropolis, the thoroughfares crisscrossing country. Yellow was the color of protest against the Marcos dictatorship and Mrs. Aquino ascended to the presidency clad in fighting yellow.

"Tita Cory" or Auntie Cory, President Corazon Aquino of the free Philippines, 1933-2009, Inspirational pro-Democracy People's Leader!

[reuters newsimage, 1997,]

An inspiration to countless people around the world, Corazon Aquino, the surprise People's Leader who toppled the Ferdinand Marcos dictatorship of the Philippines, has died of cancer at 76 years.

She started a fire, one which saw the ouster of Marcos, the downing of the Berlin wall and so much more tremendous history of the victories over totalitarian dictatorships in the late 20th...

Thank you, Tita Cory... Rest well... you deserve it. BTW, "Laban!" means "Fight!"
